Research Assignment one: Reading: The First Lisbon or Durer Rhinoceros of 1515

I do prefer Durer's work because I really enjoy the mark making and detail he put into the head of the rhinoceros. He was guided with minimal information about this creature and you can see the abstraction with his marks, its incredible. It was not an anatomically correct rhino but it definitely showed a strong and positive representation of the animal. I especially enjoyed the added spikes to the horn and face, it gives off a really powerful presence to this animal.

Other than Durer's, I really liked Burgkmair's rhino because of the gentleness of the head. It is a more realistic depiction of the rhino, its presence feels more real. It gives off this relaxed feeling even though the rhinoceros has its feet tied together by rope, seems almost submissive with a longing expression.
